Default 240 wont start after new main fuel pump and filter

Just installed a new main fuel pump and filter on my 1987 240 wagon. Pump is working. Car cranks well, just won’t start. Thoughts?

I'd use some starting fluid to make sure it's the fuel that's the problem. If it fires up momentarily then you'd know for sure.

Might be a stupid question but was it running before the pump and filter change?

hello,

another suggestion based on today experience changing the in tank pump : you have air in the conduits.
To cope with that I did start manually both pumps thanks to the fuse box for 30 seconds, then I started the motor without any issue. Be sure to drive a few kilometers after that to ensure all air is gone.

Default obvious answer to starting problems

Starting problems like yours are almost always because of the failure of the crankshaft sensor. You can replace fuel line components over and over again, replace the fuel relay again and again, all to no avail.
Just go to Volvo and get a genuine crank shaft sensor, about $70. Unplug it at back of engine near cowling. Use your long arm and wiggle your hand and crescent wrench to sensor that sits on the very back of engine, down low. Maybe YouTube can help. I used a 3 foot socket extension to tighten the new one back in. Plug it in and walaaa! Another 200,000 miles are yours.

Default reason behind why crankshaft sensor mimics fuel related issues

If you study carefully the wiring diagram you will see that in Volvo's wisdom they will not allow the spark plugs to spark if the computer does not see that the crank is turning....... Simple as that.

'87 don't have crankshaft sensors but a Hall effect sensor--not so easy to replace...

Default Crankshaft sensor type?

Per the IPDUSA website the same sensor for crankshaft was used from 1973 to 1993.....

The crankshaft sensor shown on IPD site was used for LH 2.4 fuel injection systems - which is '89 and newer.

Default right!

You are right. My answer applies to my 1990 model 245DL. Other models may vary as you stated.
