Default 244 DL -Water leaking into fusebox

I am happy to join the ranks of volvo owners with my '83 244 DL, now, to get it running well! It sat for several years in a garage and I got it for $300 ( from Texas, no rust on it!).

I had heard the fusebox can get water into it if the proper seals are not there/intact. My friend's late 80's 240 has this problem (the wipers and fan quit when its wet out). Many of my fuse terminals are corroded showing obvious water damage. This morning after a rain I noticed a stream of water coming out of the fuse box. The car still started, but everything was pretty wet in there.

My question is: Is there a way to restore the proper seals/weatherstipping whatever to this area to keep water out? Or should I just learn to live with it? It would be nice to fix that leak, as the car smells like a moist fishing shack.

Other than that, she's a great runner for a 24 year old car with 245k on her!

Check your local auto parts store to see if they can get the gaskets. if not you can always call volvo though they will be expensive. If you want to do it the poor mans way I would just go to home depot and get a tube of caulk. It will waterproof it as good as anything and something as simple as a gasket doesn't need to be perfect.

I have a slightly different problem and wondered whether caulkwill help here...

-------------------

Similar to another posting I found, I get a wet carpet when it rains. I can see where the water droplets are coming in around the rubber gasket where the back of the wiper moter goes through the firewall.

Is there an easier way to fix this than disconnecting the wiper motor and using some foam water proof sealant?

For example, can I just place some type of sealant around this rubber gasket on the inside of the car?

In either case, what sealant product (brand and name) is recommended?

Thanks
