Default 245GL wagon, starting issues

Hello, I have a 245 Diesel wagon ('82) that has some trouble starting. I bought it last weekend (knowing it started rough). I drove it home about an hour and half, and it ran and drove great the whole way. It's really hard to start when it's cold though (it's been around 45F here). Even when I have the block and pan heater both plugged in (I checked - they both work). I also checked the front 3 glow plugs, and they're all good and have 12V to them when the light on the dash comes on. Once you do get it started and warmed up, you can turn it off and restart it without a whole lot of trouble (it could still start better when warm though).

The guy I bought it off of said the starter needed rebuilt because it wasn't turning over fast enough. I don't know if this is 100% correct or not though, it seems to turn over pretty good. I did have the starter off and apart, but it was fairly clean inside and the brushes weren't worn too much.

I don't wanna just go out and buy a starter and still have the same problem though.

Is there any ways of finding out for sure whats wrong?

Thanks, Spenser

Well I think I found out whats going on with my enigne. I took the oil fill cap off while it was running - and I got a hissssss then an AMAZING amount of blow-by pouring out of the valve cover. So this is the rings leaking exhaust (mainly) down into the crankcase when each cylinder fires. The PCV valve is probably dirty (didn't check it yet), but theres more blow-by coming out the breather as well so it can't be completely plugged.

I'll see if I can take a quick picture and/or a short video of it tomorrow or something. It's depressing how bad it is... But out the engine comes then and I'll have to start ordering parts to rebuild it.
