740 1991 odometer

The odometer is no longer working in my 1991 740 non-turbo wagon.
What usually fails with the odometer?
How can I troubleshot the problem to correct it?

Slight chance of the pick up wires at the differential being at fault, most likely the capacitors at the speedo head itself or the soldering points in the circuit board. 1991 and '92 are the worst years.
