740 fuel problem
I'm totally new to Volvo and to this forum, but I thought some members might point me in the right direction for resources.
I have an '87 740 that I'm racing with some friends and there is a problem with the fuel system when the tank gets below 1/2 full. It only intermittently sends fuel to the engine and it cuts out. This is a big problem because we have to keep the tank more than half full which limits our ability to run an effective race.
Can somebody point me towards resources that might help me understand how the fuel system is set up and how I might repair this problem myself?( There are limits to the amount of money we can spend having the car repaired, so we would like to do this ourselves).

The in tank pump may be OK but there is a small rubber hose that usually fails. When it cracks it will not pump fuel when the tank is below half full. So if you change the pump don't forget to change the rubber (bellows shaped) hose with a straight piece of hose.
Hello folks, thanks for confirming the issue. I'll have an opportunity to dive into this later this week (Thursday or Friday). Unfortunately because the car isn't street legal, we won't have a chance to confirm the fix until the Friday before race-day!
