740 shuts off
I have a 88 740. Has been running perfect. Now starts runs great for 12 to 15 miles shuts off. Wait 30 mins starts runs12 to 15 miles shuts off. Here is what I find No fuel when trying to start. Here is what has been done Fuel pump and relay, main relay, amm, starter switch. I jumped across the fuel pump relay and the pumps run. I checked the main relay and it clicks. Battery is good, terminals and connections clean. It is like there is a bad relay that gets hot and shuts off, let it cool and it runs again. I am at a loss as what to check or where to look. Any help??
It could be the Hall sensor, the distributor pick up which goes bad. All the mentioned parts you replaced, like the fuel relay, is it an OEM? A lot of new parts for these cars are substandard and fail prematurely. One shouldn't assume that just because a part is new it's good.
Did you replace the radio suppression relay on the front of the coolant tank.
Kudos to lev!!! I swapped the distributor from my deer killer. It started as always, ran for 15 mins, shut it off and it restarted. Turned ito off let it sit, restarted. Did it again and started again. Proof will be road test tomorrow however the problem seems to be solved. Thanks and Kudos to all who helped this will keep my brick going for another 400k.
