Been a while. I'm restoring my gf's 740 Sedan. The trunk leaks. After searching the threads, this sounds like the lenses on the tail lights are leaking. I've picked up a some replacement tail lights and you can see in the pic how I sealed one lamp with silicone caulk - not sure I got all the joints. The other light obviously has minimal glue holding in the lens and the mating surface is quite coarse. You can also see where the siliconed light has been drilled out for drainage. On the other light, no drill holes and you can see where one light started to melt the housing and where the center light filled up with water.

From everything I've read, it is the water running down the trunk and over the leaky light lenses that allows water in the trunk. I purchased new foam seals, but don't like them because they are half the thickness of factory originals at 6mm. Where can I buy a good 6mm high density closed cell foam to replace the originals? What type of foam is it?

Does the silicone sealed light seem like it should be water tight?

How can I re-glue the lenses on the other tail light? Obviously it needs a good soak and cleaning. Can I "bed" each lens in silicone on the light body? Or is it better to use glue and what type? Should I file or dremel the mating surfaces to create a cleaner/smoother mating surface?

What is the best way to seal the hole in the orange lens?

What is the best way to seal the crack in the other orange lens?
