740 Transmission-Swap or Not?
I have a ’85 740 GL Turbo Diesel. We are going to run it in a “ 24 Hours of Lemons” race. The race is kind of a bomber endurance race on a very short road coarse. It actually is about 8 hours of racing each day over 2 days.
Currently the car has an automatic trans. I am concerned that an automatic won’t survive and am contemplating a switch to a manual.
Can anyone provide feedback whether the diesel was available with a manual? Can the automatic transmission be swapped out with a manual? What models and/or years update or backdate can be used.
Any feedback or other valuable information regarding the performance of this car would be appreciated.
