82 SW alternator tension arm bushing
Hello, All.
New to this site but a long-time Volvo guy. Just now pulling out the tools and trying to revive a couple of 245s.
I am trying to remedy a won't-stay-on tensioner arm for the alternator that has a nearly dead bushing.
Reading one post about constant shearing of the tensioner arm, I was wondering what the purpose of the bushing was. Is it meant to dampen the sound/vibration? Is it meant to electrically isolate the alternator? Looking to figure out a McGyver fix for the weekend, though I will order bushing when I figure out whether an AC/power steering bushing is the same.
TIA,
Bill

this is the parts catalog for a 1982 240 alternator, shows two bushings with the same part number

(parts #3 and #10)
Tasca shows that part as a generic rubber bushing, in stock, $7.50 list, $5.50 at Tasca...
so you can probably get it from any dealer.
its not to electrically isolate the alternator as the alternator body is grounded, so it must be for mechanical or vibration isolation, probably to dampen vibration from the belt.

Ordered my bushings from IPD. Wondering if putting the tensioner arm engine bolt through a fender washer would work to temporarily keep the tension in my belts (keep the mushy bushing from shrugging off the arm?)
any thoughts?

any thoughts?

yeah, that might work. i've gotten away with all sorts of dirty tricks with fender washers
they do bend if you overtorque them, but thats not always a bad thing. i wonder if a neoprene fender washer under the metal one would help in any way?
