Default 86 240 Timing Belt

Just a quick question ..... I just got this 86 240DL wagon with the 2.3 motor -- if the timing belt breaks does it trash the whole motor like some cars? or just put a new belt on and go?

Thanks in adavance

This is my first Volvo and I wanna make sure I have it road ready and beings this belt could break and cost more then 3hrs of work and 25.00 belt I feel I best change it now

Please if someone has the time ... type me out simple instruction

There is a large bolt on the crank pulley: the job is not to hard, just time consuming, while you are there do the water pump to.
The best thing to do is to get the Haynes book. It 's great, it shows everything step by step.
Have fun

Thanks for the info on the pulley nut ..... I've been reading more and there seems to be many conflicting posts about this engine being interference or non- here is one I found ... I'm confused as to what to believe .... does anyone hold the truth?

The Volvo SOHC engines are non-interference engines meaning that pistons and valves will not collide with one another in the event of a timing belt failure. It essentially means that you have to replace the belt – once you have your car towed home. In contrast, the B234 double overhead cam (DOHC) engines are interference engines. A broken timing belt will result in the engine being badly damaged. Pistons and valves cannot occupy the same space at the same time.

My engine is a B230F , non interference.

The B230E is an interference, probably due to gigher compression (lower head).

B234 is interference too.

Rebuilding the F type head (skimming) will turn it into an interference type when enough material is removed, I think by rebuild #5. They sell a thicker head gasket to avoind this problem if the head has been skimmed to the danger zone.
