Default 87 245 air mass meter replacement question

My daughters 1987 245 broke down and I had it towed to my house and figured out the problem was the air mass flow meter. I replaced it with a used one and the car starts and runs, runs well when warm but struggles when first started. Besides the air flow meter there was several things wrong. There was some vacuum lines that were off. One that goes on top by the throttle I just plugged as I didn't have the right type hose to replace it with. Could that capped off vacuum line be the cold start issue, or is there some sort of adjustment from the new used air mass meter.

Thanks,

Dave

whats on the other end of that broken vacuum line?

often cold start problems are related to the ECT sensor (Engine Coolant Temperature). theres actually TWO fo these, one is just for the temp gauge on the dashboard, and the other important one is for the ECU (Engine Control Unit) and ICU (Ignition Control Unit).

these temp sensors are screwed into the engine just under the intake manifold runners, the one in the middle is the ECU/ICU ECT, and has a two wire connector. when the engine is cold, each pin should be about 2500 ohms from ground (as high as 6000 ohms if its freezing cold), and when the engine warms up, the resistance drops til it hits around 200 ohms (I think, this is all from memory). what often happens to 85-87 cars is, the insulation cracks and the wires short out inside hte harnesses. See, http://www.swedishbricks.net/700900F...eSensors1.html for some info although its mostly talking about LH2.4 on a later 240/740/940 and you have LH2.2 (mid 240/early 740)

also, I believe an 87 has a cold start injector which squirts in extra fuel when the engine is cold, so its wiring could be funky. they got rid of this 5th injector on later cars.

re: adjustment on mass air meter, the ECU should 'learn' the MAF over about 20-50 miles of driving, by comparing what hte O2 sensor says. do note that LH2.2 cars use a different MAF than LH2.4, but the connector is different too so its impossible to use the wrong one.

Hi Dave,

There should be two vacuum type hoses on the throttle body, the one on the left should go down under the corrugated air hose from the Air Mass Meter and be connected to the EGR canister under the fender on the left side. The other small line (about 1/8" diameter and made of hard plastic), is connected to a short angled hose piece and terminates at the Ignition Control Module on the right fender. The large hose about 1" in diameter, goes to one end of the Idle Air Control (IAC) also known as the air control valve.

Hope this helps.
