'87 740GLE wagon... bad fuel pump?
Well, here I am again. Right when I thought things were squared away, anyway. So, she died on me today suddenly. When I try to start the car it creates a high pitch whine. The fuel pump fuses are ok, I'm pretty sure I'm getting spark (haven't tested). The car doesn't make the normal cranking sound when the key is turned. Any advice? Thanks everyone.
I have an 86 240 dl wagon, and when the main fuel pump went, it simply stopped running similar to yours. I am guessing, but the in tank pump may be working much harder than usual to compensate as the external pump is toast. I had to have my main pump replaced while travelling, and the mechanic said he could make the pump work intermittantly if he tapped it gently. Made me wonder if it was simply a bad connection. Good luck. Rene
Oh yea, I also replaced the in tank pump with an after market unit, and it sure is louder than the volvo pump.

I would suspect the opposite and say maybe the in-tank pick-up pump is done and the main is struggling.
Exact scenario for me 2 days ago.
Listen for the noise, where is it coming from?
It's the one not making noise that needs replace.

A high pitch whine may be a starter solenoid problem. Your 740 will NOT start if your main fuel pump has failed, even though the in-tank pump works. But, your 740 will start if your in-tank pump has failed but your main fuel pump works. Visit www.stepbystepvolvo.com for more on diagnosing no-starts on the 740.
