Default '95 940T-Crankshaft positioning sensor ?

Good evening gentlemen,

I could use your help on solving the issue with my green Brick, a '95 940T Auto with 232k miles but well taken care of.

While traveling at highway speed last night, my son experienced the following:

1. Engine RPM's dropped to idle.
2. Pulling to the roadside, there was no increase in RPM while applying the gas.
3. Upon shutdown, the engine would not restart but would strongly turn over.

So the car was flat bedded home.

Upon starting to work on the car tonight, we see that;

1. Timing, accessory belts and fuses are good.
2. Checking with a timing light, there is no spark at the plug or coil wires.
3. Fuel pressure is strong at the Schraeder valve on the fuel log.
4. With a digital VOM, we get about 8VDC at the coil with the ignition on.
5. The battery checks a bit low at about 12.2VDC, possibly due to excessive cranking.

So, I am not sure how to read any fault codes if available. I'm not sure of any other things to check or how to check the CPS.

I would appreciate any suggestions or comments.

Cheers! Go Olympians !

the 8v at coil seems low to me. I get battery voltage there on 1988 240. CPS is a hall pickup. One wire is ground (.2v or less with circuit on), one is power (either 12v or 5v) and one wire is signal (you can test signal with $20 logic probe, you should get pulse when cranking. Output is square wave ususally 5v-0v-5v-0v-etc

WOJeepster,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I found my Haynes manual that had been packed away. I'm reading up on the fault codes and how to retrieve them. I don't see any pictures or reference to the CPS. Maybe it's called something different in GB.

Or possibly, the control module.

Either way, I keep you posted.

Take care.

Mike,

You may want to visit www.stepbystepvolvo.com and look through the diagnostic guide for 740/940 no-starts.
