Default '88 240 wagon windshield washers

Neither front nor rear windshield washer pump is working. I cannot hear any noise when I activate them. They are on the same fuse as the headlights, which are working, so it cannot be the fuse (?). Are they just worn out or could it be something else?

Thanks

John

Are you sure they are on the same fuse as the headlights? My list of fuses for the 240 has them on the same as the horn (windscreen) and the cigar lighter (rear wash). How are those fuses?

Did you test for power at the motors yet?

No, have not tested for power. don't know how to do that. Is it easy to do? I don't own a voltmeter (cos I don't know how to use it, either). Is it simple to use? If so, how? what do I look for if buying one?
Thanks
John

Voltmeters are easy to use. You need one with a digital readout for accuracy. Go for the cheapest you can find - they all work the same way. Mine cost 2.99GBP and is ideal.

Basically you have two leads which you connect or touch on to the terminals of the wires you want to test. Obviously one is positive (red) and the other negative (black). Don't worry if you touch the lead to the wrong polarity - you won't break anything - it will still give a reading but will have a minus sign in front of it.

There are many other settings on even the most basic of meters but there should be an instruction leaflet to help you out. The two settings I use most are the DC and Ohms. The Ohms setting shows continuity in a circuit.

Go for it. You can always learn how to do it by testing the battery.

Sounds like you are a Brit. GBP and "Estate" sort of give it away. Give my best to Durham! A beautiful city and have a pint for me

You were right about the fuses, but that did not solve the problem. Both fuses are fine. I have borrowed a voltmeter from a friend but it has no instructions so I have absolutley no idea what I am doing. what am I testing for and what should I do? when I hold leads to terminals of washer pump there is a reading...is this continuity? What does that mean? How do I check that there is power getting to the pump? Could it be a bad ground? Also, is it mere coincidence that the neither washer pumps is working nor is rear wiper motor. Could it be a problem with the switch at the stalk?

Ok check the wires at the motors. The motor might even tell you which is positive and Negative.
Put the black lead to a ground on the car. Put the red lead to the wire for the motor and have someone pull the stalk and see if you have 12 Volts showing on the meter.

Do that for both motors If you have 12 Volts then here is what you do next. Put the red lead to the positive on the battery. Then take the black lead and go the the what you suspect is the ground for the Motor. If you have a good ground you will read 12 Volts again on the meter. Then the motor would be bad.

The Rear wiper might be a totally diffrerent problem.
The wiring harnesses run through the tailgate hindges. The wires are known to break.
Open the hatch and look in the hindges and see if the wires are broke.

But that will only affect the rear wiper motor,Brake,Tail lights.

Thank you for spelling it out. I appreciate it....it's the only way I'm going to learn this stuff. Unfortunately I cannot do this until day after tomorrow as car is in the shop....smoking badly on way in to work this morning; turns out to be some cam seal (?)...small rubber plug that has shrunk and popped out...another $182! Could be worse.

Sounds like the Rear Cam Plug Blew out.
You must have been leaking some oil.

Yes, smoking all the way to work! It was the cam seal.

Have solved wiper & washer problem: both washer pumps (impellers) had seized. It was an easy fix: dismantled pumps and sprayed WD40 ....worked a charm.
As for the rear wiper, the power wire had come apart at a connector, so pushing the connectors together solved the problem. I hope all problems are that easy to fix
