Default 88 740 turbo going throw a lot of oil

Oh, I'm going throw about a qt every 250-500 miles.

It's got 160K and the engine pistons are a bit noisy. because of this is it burn oil? I've heard other 740 and 940 this loud that didn't seem to go through as much oil as I do.

I've had the car since 145k. and I've been dealing with oil consumption. I've replaced the oil and crank seals, the dizzy o-ring, oil pan gasket, oil fill cap o-ring. I've looked over the car don't see any major leaks that would warrant the oil I'm going through. There a little at the drain plug, valve cover despite putting on 2 different new oil fill o-rings it's sweating from that area....

Today I was looking at the car and there oil at the idle adjust screw, I pulled the intake tube and theres a bit of oil in the intake tubes. not puddles like I've seen in VW's. I even pulled the tube from the turbo to the intercooler inlet and I don't see a ton of oil in the turbo, like maybe a seal is bad.

Long story short I'm curious if a gummed up oil trap could cause issues. o lets say the ports/path for the fresh oil that gets pulled up with vapor isn't able to go back to the crank case and is being sucked into the intake manifold and intake tubes???

Also I was messing with the flame trap and when I removed the vacuum hose from the flametrap to the intake manifold a bunch of oil started squirting out the oil dip stick tube? Is that a sign a a clogged oil trap?

yeah, sounds like it could be a flugged up oil trap. on my 92 turdblo, the crankcase vents into a heated fitting on the air tube between the MAF and the turbo intake. I dunno if an 88 is the same (there were a moderate number of changes introduced in 92)

I know of that heated element of some sort on newer 5 cylinders. That's not on mine.

I'm sick of putting money in this turd. to add I've never see any blue smoke ever. What I'm really curious about is if it's normal for oil to splash out the dipstick with the vacuum port removed? I've seen them so bad that oil comes out with everything hook up.

no oil should be splashing out of the dip stick under any conditions, that suggests the vent tubes are completely plugged up. if thats the case, your engine will blow its oil seals eventually, and oil will start coming out the drive shaft, or camshaft or anywhere else it can.

if you remove the oil filler cap with the engine idling and lightly place it back over the opening, does it chatter, or does it get sucked down? it should get sucked down slightly, it definitely should NOT get blown up.

this is a 1991 turbo, it too has the heated connection on the airtube between the MAF and turbo...

see it just to the left of the top of the fan shroud, and under the topmost air pipe.

Is it possible because of the maze inside of the oil trap that the system needs engine vacuum to help pull the vapors into the manifold?

Though if it's doing it at idle with the least amount of combustion, firing events, and greatest vacuum, going down the road it presumably has to be getting worse. More money to spend..... IPD still the cheapest place to get parts?

I see the heater.

IPD and FCPEuro are good for aftermarket and common tuneup parts. for more unusual real volvo parts, you pretty much have to go to a dealer, or Volvo Parts - Authentic OEM Volvo Parts direct from Volvo Parts Webstore | VolvoPartsWebstore.com or TascaParts.com (both dealers with webstores)

Well, hell. I'll throw an oil trap on it and if it still goes through oil I'm getting rid of it.

I'll brake it open and take a pic of the insides for fun.

SOunds like you got a severely plugged up PCV system--it has to be serviced every 12k miles.

The flame trap needs to be serviced every 12k not replacement of the oil trap?

Turbos have a hollow t-fitting for the flame trap that I haven't seen plug up.

even on the turbos that don't have a 'flame trap', you still should clean the oil trap periodically. 12k might be too often, but 100K is definitely too long.

I have not replaced the box since I owned the car. I did pull it off and throw it in a parts washer.... Probably didn't do much of anything.

I tend to just pour a little kerosene or wd40 or whatever solvent in them, hold the openings closed with my fingers and shake hard, drain out. repeat if its particularlly nasty. you only need to replace the trap if its cracked.

replaced the oil trap, maybe 30 minutes total.

there wasn't as much build up as I thought there would be inside the box. I need new batteries for my digital camera so I haven't snapped a picture.

I can say that now when you remove the vacuum hose at the manifold oil doesn't squirt out like before. Just smoke. Plus the hose from the oil trap to the flame trap was cracked bad, so I also fixed a vacuum leak.

PS said crack hose from IPD is way beefer then the one I had on there and sure will last way longer.
