88 volvo 740 won't start
My volvo has been running fine lately, however the other night i tried starting it and nothing happened. I checked and cleaned the battery and starter cables and still nothing. I also checked the voltage on the battery and started and it checked out fine. When u turn the key with the headlights on they go off immediately. the starter also doesn't click or nothing all u hear is a buzzing sound coming from near the starter when u turn the key. Also when i jumped the starter between the two terminals it spins but won't engage. Please help
I jumped the starter and it fired right up with someone turning the key Could anyone figure out what my problem is now?

I read your post again, lets start over. You have forced me to use my extraordinary paint shop skills
I think you may have crossed the wrong terminals. You need to cross the center terminal with the right hand spade terminal on the solenoid. Did the engine crank over?If it doesn't crank the starter is bad,if it does crank you may have a problem with the park-neutral switch.
Your car doesn't have a starter relay that's what the solenoid is for, well that and engaging the starter drive. I don't have any idea what a ignition turbo is.
Be sure your battery is fully charged.

Hey dan sorry to confuse u, i should of put a comma after ignition because i saw your screen name turbo, thats what i meant, sorry. Your saying i should jump the center post with the one that has the little green wire on it, thats the right spade post

You need to check your park-neutral switch,it's located on the side of the shift mechanism.Check the pink wire coming from the key switch,it should have 12v with the key in crank position,if it doesn't key switch could be bad,if it has 12v continue on.Check the green/blue wire coming from the p-n switch,it should have 12v with the key in the crank position,if it doesn't have 12v p-n switch is bad. PM me your email and I'll send you a larger wiring diagram.

I don't know anything about the 740's but, the same thing happened to my 850 and it was a bad ignition. Their was a part worn in it and it wasn't making any contact. But, my car made the exact same noises and my lights would go out too. If the other things don't work, try that.
Turbo is the man all it was, was the p/n switch was loose from the mechanism, which caused the switch, not being closed when it was in park, now it runs fine, that problem was driving me nuts. Thanks to everyone for all their help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YIPPEE
Thanks, Bob
