Default 88 Volvo 765 tic Air Bag Replacement

I am posting this here because 940 740 were not listed with the 760. I am trying to replace the air bag. I have not been able to figure out how to get the cover under the steering column off. On the left is the tilt control and the left is ignition switch. The air bag is the same for 740,760, & 940. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Default RE: 88 Volvo 765 tic Air Bag Replacement

I changed my airbag yesterday. It took about 55 minutes. Hope someone finds this usefull. The steering column cover is held with 4 phillips head screws that are up inside the deep holes on the lower side, I had to take out the 2 larger phillips head screws and then hold down on the lower cover to remove the 4 lower screws. The tilt lever is held by a set screw through a hole in lower cover. The airbag is held by 2 T30 Torx screws. The T30 screwdriver is hard to get on the screws.
Then there is no room to turn the Torx screwdriver to break loose the screws. Had to use locking pliers to turn the Torx screwdriver. When I removed the airbag the wire connector was melted to the airbag. I wrapped the connector with tape and pushed it out of the way and installed the replacement airbag. I really did not care if the airbag works because I wanted to get rid of the black duct tape that was on the center of the steering wheel. I bought the airbag used at a nearby junkyard for $30. Airbag covers with no airbag in them are listed for $75.

Hope someone can use this info.
