89' 240 DL wagon, some general questions
I will (hopefully) soon be getting my parents' 89' 240 DL (might be GL but I'm pretty sure its DL) wagon.
It has over 190k miles on it and I was wondering if it would make sense to buy a new engine or just a new(used) volvo entirely.
The "check engine" sign has been on for as long as I can remember, I was told not to worry about it. The car has been inspected and even the Garage people say, don't worry bout it.
About how much would a new paint job cost, and what type of paint job should I get?

I don't know what kind of periodic inspections you have where you live. In Calif. a bad CEL will fail the emissions inspection. I would fix the CEL or get a new mechanic.
190k miles isn't a whole lot for these engines. Why are you thinking of replacing it? The engine should outlast the body due to rust.
A good paint job is $2k. But you can get a cheap paint job for $200. It just depends on how long you plan to keep the car and if you want it to be nice or just another old car.

89 240
Tipple- I dont understand why you would consider putting a new engine in your 89, unless it is dead. I have an 89 also (wagon) 210k and also an engine light on. Mine runs fine. I'm also in New York (Syracuse) In NY it will pass inspection with the light on- its old enough that NY doesnt care, at least until they can figure out how to make some money off of it. Jeeze, Just give it a good thorough cleanup and an nice (color matched?) wax job and drive it, You'll have plenty of other stuff to drop coin on. Like taxes....
