Default 89 740 GL radio

Well after 345K miles the radio in my brides 89 740 is starting to crap out. It is having static and cuts in and out periodically. So before I start the search for a replacement I'll ask if anyone has one laying around that they may have removed to replace with an update or does anyone know of a service/repair place that could fix this one. Just asking.

an original 1989 radio? pretty sure you'll get laughed at if you bring it to most any electronics place, the only place you'd likely find one would be in another original 1989 or similar years, and well, 90% of people have replaced them a long long time ago with something more modern, CD player, aux in for ipods, maybe even bluetooth for smartphone linkup (speakerphone, music). our 1987 240 (original owner) is on its 4th or 5th stereo since new.

Have you checked to make sure you don't have a simple issue like a disconnected antennae?

If you were talking about a tape deck that wore out or something I wouldn't be surprised, but the radio itself is pretty bullet proof. I've seen many much older original radios still functioning as new.

I've got an 80s Alpine in my car, I've kept it because I lusted after a similar stereo when I first started driving. Granted in 2014 it leaves something to be desired in functionality, but I found a blue tooth cassette at Radio Shack that overcomes the most archaic aspects (cassette tape).

I see oem radios all the time in the j yards... $5-10 in the self service yards... Repair is cost prohibitive--everybody wants a minimum of a $100 to just take a look. Also, try ebay; bet you can find one there.

Finished a few thousand looks on ebay and they have only one (for parts) listed that would fit the 740/760/940 setup. In the process of doing a search in various salvage search sites. I checked the connectors and the antenna and everything looks good. Also if I do find one it has to have the code with it otherwise it is no good. I'll do some looking as I have plenty of time now that the weather is colder. We'll see what turns up but if I can't find one I'll have to go with an aftermarket conversion.

You can get ANY Volvo radio code from the Volvo dealer. You need to give them the serial number of the radio, they give you the code right over the phone, (no one steals cassette radios anymore), easy-peasy!

Just an update as I had found a radio out of a 1990 wreck. It came from a salvage yard in Md. I found it on the web and also discovered there were 2 radio's used in these 740's . The other interesting thing is there was no code for it and when I took it to the Volvo dealer he could not find a code. I installed it and it worked without a code. So we are good to go again. Oh price was $125 and it only took 15 minutes to install.
