Default '90 240 wheel clicking

Hey everyone,

I am new to this forum. I acquired a 240 about 6 months ago as my first car. Its a sedan and has 256,000 miles on it now. I am slowly restoring the car. For the past two weeks, there's been a clicking sound that comes from the front passenger wheel well. I checked the suspension and everything seems fine. I pressure washed the wheel well and the tire. None of that helped.

It sounds like as though a stone were stuck in the tire grooves (I spent an hour inspecting every single groove and there is nothing stuck). Its driving me nuts. Can someone please help?

Also, does someone have a step-by-step instructions set to change the power window motor? I have removed the interior panel but cannot find the steps to switch the motor and regulator out.

Thanks!

Google will likely help you with the window motor/regulator.

As for the clicking, not sure what that would be. On a FWD car, it clicks when the CV axles are bad (while in tight turns).

Thanks for the reply! I thought of that, but then the 240 is RWD. I checked it out when I had taken it for an oil. The bearings, struts and everything else seem pretty tight and nothing's leaking fluids or anything.

I have been through almost every related post of every forum in the past few weeks. Which is why I ended up spending so much time on that tire

Hopefully, I can figure this out soon.

you don't have the 'Corona' umtpeen-lotsa spoke alloy wheels, do you?

these...

the brushed chrome hub caps on those (not shown in above picture) are notorious for rattling.

Nope. My car came with just the regular steel rims. I looked at it again just to make sure - of course, there were no stones, nails anything of the sort. The tire holds pressure. Anything else that might be wrong? I took the wheel cap off and drove it around, but there is no difference.

By the way, Pierce, your posts have been a great source of help in the past few months I have owned this car. Thanks a lot!

the wheel lug nuts are all tight, right? and if you jack the wheel up, and spin it by hand, it spins freely, without making any noises? I might jack that wheel up, put that corner of the frame on a jack stand, then grab the wheel at 3+9 oclock and give it a good hard wiggle, ditto at 6 and 12. clunks at 3 and 9 but not 6 and 12 often indicate steering tierod play. slop/play at 12 and 6 could be a loose wheel bearing.

Rust can take its toll on the brake splash guards. Maybe you got one that's weak enough to intermittently contact the wheel and causing the sound that you're hearing.

@Pierce - I did take a quick look yesterday night. There was nothing at 3 & 9. I am not too sure about the 12 & 6. I shall check it again next week once I am done with my exams.

@Pugluvr - Thanks! I shall check that too when I am checking the wheel out.

I shall post back again mid-week. Thanks for the help guys! Really appreciate it

Unhappy

So I did look into the wheels - there is no play in either 3 and 9 or 6 and positions. I tried rotating the tires too. No difference. This sound is just driving me nuts. I had the oil changed at the local Meineke a couple of days ago and the mechanic also checked and said everything is fine.

I am taking it to the Volvo dealership to see if they can get anything out of this.
Any other ideas?

ok, if swapping (rotating) the front and rear tires didn't change anything, its NOT the rim or tire, its got to be the disc brake or spindle. jack up that front/right corner of the car, pull the wheel off, and spin the rotor by hand, inspect the brake pads, etc. note the disc brake rotor is held to the rest of the hub via a single screw/pin when the wheel is unbolted (the wheel bolts hold it tight normally).

the dust shield is the tin plate around the back of the brake rotor
