90 740 GL caliber questions
The local auto parts store told me that there are two different calipers for my car. I'm just curious if this is true or not. I am planning to replace the pads and rotors.

True. Especially around 1990 they used various suppliers (Ate, Bendix, Brembo, etc.) and I have seen some crazy variations. Pads are usually pretty standard but the calipers can vary. Best to remove the part and compare with what they have at the store.
Yes there are 3 types. Look at the rear driver side door post and there is data on which calipers you have . There is a number listed on the table under brakes. The system goes : 1 = Girling front and rear calipers , 2 = Girling front and ATE rear calipers and the 3 = Bendix front and ATE rear.
You could also pull up photos of the calipers on different auto parts store web sites and compare what you physically have to the pictures. It's rare but someone may have previously replaced what you should have from the factory with something that was better or cheaper or just more easily available since there are options that fit.
Yes, this absolutely true. Get used to it, I'm sure this will be the case for something else you replace in the future.
