I have a 1991 240 DL automatic that has been a bit of a nucance ever since my parents bought the thing. I am a land cruiser enthusist and I don't know too much about volvos so here it goes.

1)Every week at some random time the car will start and start sputtering and running rough for a minute or two then it sorts itself out. In the case of last night it wouldn't start after it died, but it did start this morning.

2) I'll be driving the car and it a high idle will kick in and the car will almost speed up a bit. This will only last a bit then it sorts itself out.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would start by checking the trouble codes, see the LH2.4 section here:

I'm guessing it has something to do with your idle control valve or the ECU temp sensor.
