91 744 Fuel pump issues + Fix
1991 744 Regina NA stock redblock
Hard start - Takes a lot of cranking / Dies turning right
-Replaced fuel filter - No difference
-Replaced fuel pump (Regina-in tank) Problem solved......... then came back 6 months later
Hard starting again which got worse and worse. Didn't seem to matter what the fuel level was
Then it died on me one day on a hard right turn with a 1/4 tank left. I was able to recreate the issue over and over on hard rights but turning left was fine. I knew the pump had to come out again.
-I pulled the pump out and it had slid down on the sender assembly a bit. The old pump had a detent in it which kept it in place with in the plastic barrel holder. This one does not. On other cars ive worked on the fuel pump connects directly to high pressure hose. The pump discharge pipe on this setup runs into an oval thing made of metal and plastic with a diaphragm looking thing inside. Neither Google, the forums or my manual were able to identify what it is. I wanted to replace it but I couldn't prove that it exists.
Im gonna call it a Fuel Pressure Accumulator. When the pump slid down it also rotated sideways and was cocked going into the FPA causing a fuel leak and loss of flow. Maybe it moved and leaked by more on right turns?
FIXED VVV
-I wired the pump to the assembly so as to lock it in place. Starts easy now and I can turn right again!
I just wanted to post this as a reference for when it happens to me or someone else again
