92 240: flame trap, yes or no?
Hello all,
I decided to try a throttle body cleaning on my 92 240. Success! While I was in there, I thought I'd do the flame trap as well. After much internet research, I thought I had it sussed, but I can't find no stinkin' flame trap. Some posts that I read on this forum suggested that in the latest models, there was no flame trap, but instead a "pcv box."
Directly under the throttle body is a silver cannister thing. It has two hoses, coming out at 90 degrees to each other. The one that comes out the bottom loops around up to the intake manifold. The other comes up to the bellows, right by the throttle body.
Ideas?
BTW, looked at a project 122 here locally in north Alabama. I may pick it up and commence to fixin'. [:-]

Well, the "silver cannister thing" under the throttle body is, I just found out, the idle speed actuator (or idle speed motor?). So, per some posts here, I'll clean it w/throttle body cleaner and see if that helps. If there is a flame trap, I sure can't find it.

Yes your car has one. It comes up between cylinder 3 and 4 on the intake manifold. You will see a hose that comes from the induction hose over to the intake. Pull the hose and you should see the white sheild in there. Also follow the small hose to the intake manifold and clean the little nipple.

i bought the car for $500 dollar about a year ago at the GM dealer where I work at with a sever spark knockand lacked power.
I played with the car and found that the vehicle had been driven with the timming belt one tooth off. so I set it back on time anddrove it for a while, it got better but not for long....it was too late. about three months later it blew the head gasket. i decided to replace it, but what a surprise I got!! uppon removal of the head I noted that due to the severe spark knock that the previous owner drove the vehicle for who knows how long, piston #3 and #4 had been completely destroyed, to the point in which you could see the top rings on both pistons....... Ill post pics of them soon...... so then I gessed it was time to replace the engine ,but when that was done, I was surprissed to find out that this engine also lacked power and was ailed with many of the same symptoms that many of us here are concerned with for example...rough idle, lack of power, low idle, smell of raw power at the tail pipe and so on..
after countles hours of swapping parts, cleaning throtlle bodys, replacing plugs, fuel filter, checking back pressure, swapping idle motors, swapping TPS,swapping fuel rails, fuel regulators ,you name it I did it !!!! last thing I did was check the timing and VOILA .. the 940 now runs at its best and is extremely great on gas......
Moral of the story...Check your cam timming...

no... but I would imagine is close to the hydraulic trows as in the S10 and ford rangers....
If you replace it make sure you bench bleed it before installing it or you'll have fun with it...

It is called a slave cylinder but it pretty much a Hydrolic throwout bearing. Click link for a picture.

My car is 89 740T with the B230FT engine, but I don't think Volvo moved the location of the PCV stuff. Check out these pictures. I've heard that turbo volvos didn't have the little flame guard and non turbos did. Ours had on until I took it off and never put it back on. I found a spare in the junk yard, but never bothered with it (pictured below). You can see below the intake where the PCV oil trap is highlighted as well. The last picture is of the PCV system.
