Default Volvo 240 DL wagon Flame trap question

Hello I just recently bought a 1988 240 DL Wagon for $300 on CL. I was replacing the flame trap and I noticed the big hose that connects from the Flame trap to the air intake hose connected to the Throttle was not connected after replacing the flame trap and letting the car idle. Before plugging it back in I noticed there's not much air coming out of the hose (the hose is clean from the inside). I was just wondering if thats normal or is there suppose to be a good amount of air flowing out. Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

$300

You're killing me. No one sells a 240 for that price and doesn't take it to the scrap yard beforehand. Is it a real piece, or is it in immaculate condition with one owner and all records.

anyways, a little air should be fine. Does the idle bog down when you detach the hose? It should, meaning there is 'positive' ventilation. It's just at idle when you are checking it, so it not a Kirby vacuum.

The guy selling the 240 wagon Initially was asking $800 but once he brought it over I told him it had an exhaust leak and transmission/Drive shaft leak (Fixed already) and lowered it $400 and take in mind he brought the car around Midnight and I wanted to get over with it as well as him so I offered him $300 cash and a 6 pack of pabst I had in my fridge. It came with all the original owners manual and Maintenance book. It was maintained and stamped by Independent Volvo service in Pasadena, CA from 1988 till 2003 from the First original owner. Second owner who I bought it from kinda neglected the wagon. But the car is in decent condition and runs real strong...

But yeah When I detach the hose the idle does bog down. I know you stated little air is fine but how is it suppose to be, no air flowing out or a good amount flowing out or is air suppose to be flowing in or flowing out of the hose. That's the part I'm confused about. Thanks

No air means it is clogged, that's bad. You said a little, which you can feel so that's okay.

good story on the car BTW. Funny how some car sales nearly come down to how much gas is in the tank, or a six pack...

I just replaced it with a new flame trap, Could the breather box be clogged/dirty?

It could be a little dirty, won't hurt to take it off and degrease it, no need to replace. Be sure to have an extra o-ring for the box around too, I wouldn't advise reusing it.
