My speedometer quit working and the shop says i need a new speedo head. Does it matter what year of a car it comes off of? i looked on ebay and one guys has one for 250 BUCKS!!!

 

This should i/change with '91-'92 740 or 940... That's it.

 

i think turbo and nonturbo are different, too.

but... does the odometer work and the speedo doesnt, or do they both not work?

if its just the speedo, it might be bad solder joints on the speedo, or even more likely, some bad capacitors. if you have some basic soldering and electronic skills you can troubleshoot and repair. see Volvo 700/900 Speedometer Repair

if both speedo and odo are out, it might just be the wiring off the differential, where the speed sensor is located.

 

where is the speed sensor located on a 92 940gl?

 

on all the 2/7/9 cars, its in the differential, a magnetic coil pickup picks up the speed from a tone ring. the pickup is screwed into the upper third of one side of the differential cover plate, the wire disappears into the harness. the wire is a twisted pair, one white is green-white, and the other is brown or brown-white, goes through a connector in back, into the trunk harness, through the big left A-post block connector, to the instrument panel pins D:1,D:2
