Default '94 940 Cannot turn key in trunk

The key cylinder looks clean and I can insert the key smoothly, but it won't turn. The person that gave me the car, that was his mothers, claims that the trunk lock has never been changed. I've tried wiggling, lubricating with no success. I have the valet key, which will not go in the trunk lock, but will start the car, which I know is normal. The only way I can get into the locked trunk is by using the electric lock activated by the drivers door lock. Is this a common problem on these cars?

I believe you can still order individual locks from Volvo dealers keyed tto the VIN of the car so the original keys fit them.

Thanks, I guess it's no big deal. I can still get into the trunk with the electric release. As long as I don't get a flat tire and a dead battery at the same time it should be fine!

I might consider getting another cylinder once I get this car back on the road. I'm getting close.

i see two scenarios here, one the lock cylinder is NOT the same as the other locks because something was rekeyed at some point in this cars 25+ years, and the other is that one or more pins/wafers in the lock is stuck. I generally use Lock-Ease (graphite in a volatile solvent carrier), hold a rag under the lock to catch drips, and squirt a liberal amount in the lock, then run a key in/out multiple times and wiggle the lock, never force. Sometimes a few applications for a particularly sticky lock. Had one car the PO had been putting wd40 in the locks and gummed them all up.

+1 - I was going to say make sure you have the matching key and you look for signs of prior oiling or repais.
