I'm trying to adjust my driver's door to close easily and I noticed in the middle of each hinge is a torx head screw. I'm assuming these are for fine adjustments but I can't find anything about what direction the door moves when the screw is going in versus going out. Any body men out there that know how these work? Thanks

 

huh, just looked at my 92 and there's just a hole in the middle of the hinge mounting plate, no screws, and no hole in the door behind this hole. I assume you're talking about the part of the hinge that secures to the door, not the frame? the frame side is bolted through from inside the body.

yeah, I have nothing there, and my parts diagram shows nothing there for a 92 940. what year is your car?

 

It's a 1993 Turbo Wagon and all doors have those screws.

 

That's a guide pin, adjusts nothing... Some Volvos have it some don't, good question as to what it does exactly.
As far as adjustment, be careful! The closing the door better may be done a little by moving the strike plate on the B pillar otherwise the door has to be loosened by hinges on the door side and the body side. Better with two people.

 

I thought that might be it because screwing in and screwing out didn't have any effect on the position of the hinge. But what threw me was the fact that it had a torx head. I pictured an alignment pin as a solid stud or rod.


Turns out my bottom hinge had some shims under it which raised the rear end of the door and push it too close to the front curve causing binding. I took the shims out and it's much better. It looks like someone was try to align it with the back door which is too high in the front. If you loosen the hinge bolts what direction(s) does it allow you to move?

 

The hinge on the side attached to the door moves the door in and out in relation to the body.

 

Ok I didn't know that, I thought you could also move up and down. So I'm guessing those shims should help my back door like it didn't help the front. Thanks

 

I wonder why Volvo put them. To adjust my door downward and outward the shims did not work so I had to remove those guide pins and then it was easy. I don't see the need for them if you can't adjust?

 

Here's just a general door question. Why do 740/940 doors sound so tinny and hollow when they close, compared to the good, solid thunk of a 240 door closing? I would think with all the airbags in them they would weigh as much if not more?

 

there are no airbags in 740/940 doors, just in the steering wheel and maybe passenger side dashboard on the later 940s.

the doors on my 740 seem pretty solid, but they are not as heavy as the 240's, instead of brute force they used more high tensile steel. they are in fact just as strong, if not stronger.

 

Interesting. Too bad the engineers didn't go for sound and strength. It gives the impression that the car is cheaply built.

 

also, sounding tinny when you close might just mean the rubber stopper block on the latch mechanism is shot, or the door seals are worn out

 

They're both ok. Maybe I'll tape a piece of foam inside the door to absorb and muffle the sound, like I do with my golf clubs.
