Default 940 engine cuts out

940 Classic 1997 petrol 2.3L
Engine occasionally would not start. Ignition light is on and engine turns over but completely dead. After several attempts it starts normally. Car runs fine. This has occurred for some weeks. It has now cut out whilst driving. The engine just stops - no coughing or spluttering. It then will not start - same symptoms as before. After a short while it starts and runs normally.
I checked the coil and found that even with the ignition OFF there is 12v on the coil terminals. This does not seem right?
Help please.

Thanks for you reply. Yes, it all pointed to the fuel pump relay. I replaced this and engine started and ran normally. I drove for about four miles stopped for ten minutes and...……….it would not start. It turned over normally but the engine would not fire. I tried several times. After about four or five minutes it started normally and got me home!!!
Next stage is "crank shaft position sensor"? Please tell me about this.
regards

Default 940 still not starting

Furt her to my previous post my 940 classic petrol 2.3L is still suffering intermittent non starting. I have replaced the fuel pump relay but still have the problem. After replacing the relay it started normally. I drove for four miles stopped for ten minutes and it would not start. It turned over normally but the engine would not fire. After about four minutes it started normally! The crank shaft position sensor has been suggested as a possible cause. Please tell me about this. Thank you.

Here you go: https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/Eng...stition_Sensor
This will explain it. I had the same intermittent problem on my '93. It's almost a wear item because they tend to go out on all 740/940's that I've seen.

+1 on the crank position sensor. My experience is that when fuel pump relays fail you get intermittent no-start conditions. When the crank position sensor starts to fail you not only get intermittent no-starts but also the engine intermittently dies while driving.
