Default 940 hesitation,surge,occasional stall

1994 940 turbo. at idle engine will act like its missing. not a consistent pattern. the tach also will fall to zero while idling and bounce between zero and five. while accelerating it will surge at times. but once desired speed is reached drives smooth. sometimes I will put it in neutral to coast to a light, etc. and that's when it will stall. I work an $8 an hour job and just cant afford to start replacing everything to try to remedy the problem. any help. thanks

Well, it sounds IT IS MISSING at low engine speeds. To fix it you'll need to basically address some "tune up" issues, for starters.

How long has it been since there were new plugs, etc?

Best to start with compression test to eliminate more serious issues as the cause, (you could borrow the tester from a place like Autozone). If the compression is OK, then you know it's some minor ignition part.

if the tach is dropping to zero, it sounds like you're losing ignition timing... the tach comes off the control circuit that comes from the ICU and goes to the power module that fires the coil... a 1994 Turbo is LH2.4 injection w/ EZ116k ignition, have you checked the crank position sensor wiring? that gets flakey and all kinda random stuff happens generally resulting in random stalling...
