Default 940 steering racks

I just found a remanufactured ZF steering rack on a '91 940 at the local picknpull. It looks brand new and got it for $20. I was going to keep it in case I ever needed one. Turns out my '93 940 has a Koyo rack. I know they used both and when you order from FCP or Eeuro they ask which one you have. My question is "Why aren't they interchangeable?" Is it the tie rods or ends? The fluid line connectors? Anyone know about these? Thanks

At the minimum, the inner tie rods will be different. I believe the outers are interchangeable to an extent, but I know that the diameter of the inner tie rod to rack connection can differ between years and/or manufacturers.

I can't say I know anything more beyond that.

I forgot to mention that the ZF rack came with inner and outer tie rods, ready to go. If the fluid lines can connect and the universal joint to the steering column is the same, then it should fit?

Maybe? Your best bet it to closely examine the mounting points and see if they all line up.

Be sure to add an inline filter to preserve your new/old steering rack.

A filter's a good idea.
