I have a 1993 Volvo 940, and for some reason the sunroof will only move backwards. Any ideas why? I checked the fusebox and I changed out the sunroof fuse, but still nothing. I looked into the sunroof motor, but they are about 375, and I dont really want to invest that much since the car is so old. Any ideas would help.

I had that problem about ten years ago. I wound up taking the control assembly on the inside apart. You can operate it manually from that assembly. Then, I fooled around with the chain that moves the sunroof back and forth and got it to operate somewhat properly so I could open and close it electrically. I cannot specify exactly how I manipulated the chain but it took a few tries to get it aligned properly.

The only problem is that the the second function which is to open it just slightly at the rear does not work. I figured I could live without that until I learned how to repair it completely. Never got around to it, however.

I also have to put my hand on the back edge when I close it to make sure it is aligned properly.

I don't think your problem is the motor but some alignment. I chose not to pay for professional service on it since the really important repairs and service cost so much.

I like my Volvo - bought it new - but I won't buy another since repairs are so costly.

 

This happened to me as well. I believe we ended up having to buy the new motor.

 

I had this problem..

It ended up being the 'rocker' switch.. (best i can describe) that operated the sun-roof.


The contacts for 'close' weren't working.. so once opened it wouldn't close (or would rarely close).

Had to take the switch out of the dash.. And (this is very hard to describe but i'll try) there was a little flat spot worn on tiny plastic 'dowel' that the switch 'tilted' on, We had to fix that somehow (i forget what we did).. and the switch then made good contact again. You'll have to take it apart and see for yourself it was a very odd switch design.

Then again mines a 92 so not sure if its drastically different.
