940 Turbo Automatic Gearbox Problem
Hello,
I hope someone will be able to answer this question. I have a 940 Turbo automatic; it is 16years old and still in extremely good condition.
Apart from one thing, that is. A few months ago, I noticed that, on a lot of ocassions, the gear was not changing from 3rd to 4th. On the gear shift, there is a button which, if pressed, will prevent the gear changing from 3rd to 4th and I wondered if that was achieved by means of a relay; if so, could the relay have "sticky" contacts which prevent the change up from 3rd to 4th?

Welcome aboard.
There is a relay for the overdrive. In the relay/fuse panel second row extreme right hand side. Also worth checking on this system are the overdrive solenoid and the switch itself.

Thank you very much for your contribution. I have just had a look andI see2 rows of fuses and above them, well set back on the right hand side, a white square object which is probably the relay that you mention. Can you please confirm?
The first attachment shows the relays on the fuse/relay board.
The second attachment shows the location of the solenoid.
The switch is on top of the gear shift.

Thank you veru much indeed. I removed the relay and tested tor continuity between terminals 1 and 14 as described on page 36 of Volvo maintenance FAQ and got high resistance (but not infinity and also not 0) I presume that since I am testing for continuity, I should get 0. Is this a fair indication that the problem lies with the relay and not the solenoid?
I really do appreciate your help in this matter,
