Question 940 Turbo bad turbo?

hi guys, my dad owns a 91 940 Turbo and lately he was complaining that his coolant "disappears", the reservoir is always empty and he doesn't know where the coolant goes, he can't find any leaks and the headgasket was replaced a year ago so it really puzzled him. Today he asked me to change the spark plugs and so I did and when I ran the car after I was done I noticed that the turbo was smoking and it seems like the smoke is coming from the bottom of the turbo. Also, the hose from the coolant reservoir to the turbo is new... any ideas what the issue could be? thanks!

No, clue.

Clearly it's going somewhere, your not looking hard enough.

the turbo has coolant connections, those hoses are down under the exhaust manifold, and go to the side of the block near the oil cooler. maybe those hoses are dying, they are often neglected.

update. I haven't had time to check the hoses below the turbo I'll check tomorrow, also I took this pic half an hour after making this thread coolant is present where the turbo and manifold meets. White smoke comes out of the exhaust occasionally...

I don't know any mechanism coolant can get into the exhaust manifold above the turbo, unless there's a leak somewhere thats spraying it.

here's my greasy 92 turbo.. I've since replaced most of hoses and got most of the leakage under control.

mine is a mitsubishi, earlier 740s used garrets.

also, they changed the air plumbing in 1992.

1992:

I know, this is a very old thread, but did you ever find out, what was the problem? I have a 940, B230ft, doing exactly the same! Draining the coolant, sometimes quickly (1/4 liter in a few days/a few km), sometimes slowly (1/4 liter in 1000 km.). Occasionally white smoke from the exhaust. But the same spot of coolant where the turbo and manifold meet, everytime I need to add up with coolant...

White smoke means it's burning it, which means it's leaking through the head gasket.
