940 w dead transmission: rebuild or let it go?
1993 Volvo 940 in great condition w 129K mi. Of course I just got all new brakes and four tires.
A used transmission would be 1900 installed, and the rebuilt would be 2500.
The heartbreak is that I found another one exactly the same in great condition at a dealer, but it ended up dying on the road when someone went for a test drive.
So, rebuild or get a different car? Also, not sure what car to get because I love the 940 and have driven them for 20 years.
ALSO would anyone be interested in buying the car with a dead transmission? I am in VA.

940 with these miles should not have a bad trans... Ever change the fluid? Even if never changed these trannies rarely fail with 129k.
Plenty of used trans for $100 and up, labor should be $400-500... I'd never consider "rebuilt"... Don't get scammed! Get a used tranny, get it put in, $700-800 should be plenty to get it all done...

So I am back to square one because the new volvo specialist said he couldn't find a good used one (lower mileage than the car), his customer has a parts car that he could access for $800. So with labor, looking at 1500.
I am in Richmond, VA. Not sure why the prices would be so much more here.

Still out of luck here

One guy has access to a wrecked car but because it has less than 100k mi, he wants $800 for the part alone. $1500 total.
Bottom line, I can't find the part or someone to install it at the prices you mention. I am in Richmond, VA.

use Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market to search recycle yards near you. Also research which transmission number you car has (VIN search may help). They are out there in the $300 to $500 range if you don't mind driving to Suffolk or South Carolina to pick it up...
