Default 940 wagon NT abnormally loud main fuel pump

I have read on this site a noisy main fuel pump could be an indication of a non working in tank pump. How can I verify the in tank pump is actually working? Can you hear this pump running by checking at the access hole? My main pump is quite loud (loudest fuel pump I have ever heard) has been since I got her 2 yrs ago. I am curious if the ole thing is just plain tired or I have an in tank pump issue.

I do not have any issues when my fuel level gets low.

Thanks
Tim

You are better off listening at the filler neck--at the access hole there's no access unless you pull the assembly out.
