Default 95' 940 runs, dies and sometimes won't start at all

I have a 95 940 turbo. Recently, it's having issues. Two weeks ago I was running errands and on my way home it just stopped running in the middle of driving. It was very abrupt and no special noises. All the lights came on the dash and it just stopped. I placed it in park and turned off the ignition, waited a minute and it started again, but seemed to run less robust than usual. I was really scared about getting stranded since I have no money for repairs or a tow truck and it hobbled home. It did die two more times on the way home, but quickly started again after being placed in park and turned off then on. Later that day, it barely made any normal start noises though all lights on the dash came on and then on the third try in a row it seemed dead.

I assumed that it wouldn't start again, but a week later tried, and it started fine. Yesterday, I was going to run an errand, and it started, but died seconds later before I was even done backing out of my space. I placed it park and turned it off then on and it ran fine for my errand.

Today, it has normal start noises and the lights are on the dash, but no crank. It needs to crank to run and that got progressively weaker each of the two times I tried.

I am not sure what to do. I live on a shoestring budget and have some very serious medical issues. I need the car for groceries and getting to the doctor and normal errands. My health doesn't allow for much, but this is a disaster. Until recently, I could pay for normal maintenance and repairs, but cutbacks at work have slashed my income. If someone has a good idea of what's wrong with the car then maybe I can figure out how to replace the part. I'm all ears.

Most likely the crankshaft position sensor. Since you say "no crank", and "getting weaker", the battery may be getting weak as well since it looks like you have been doing a lot of cranking...

That sensor is around $40, and it is easy to change. But don't buy a $10 one as it may not be worth the good potential of it being total crap.

Thank you so much for replying!!! As of Monday, it won't crank at all. The lights come on the dash and it makes the noise like it's going to start, but the final "turning over" of the engine will not happen. I am so frustrated! Could this have progressively worsened over time to not starting at all? I found it so weird that it would stop mid drive and then restart like nothing. I can't afford non stop taxis to the doctor and metro system where I live is awful. If you still feel that's the issue then I will pursue paying to have it towed and repaired as soon as I save up for the labor. How difficult would it be to replace the part on my own? I am not mechanically versed and haven't ever made car repairs, but the tow will likely cost $100 alone. For me, that's a very big deal. Please let me know.

fuel pump and fuel pump relay were other possible causes of issue. What are your thoughts?

any number of things could cause the sorts of symptoms you describe. you need to get in there and test these things one at a time to eliminate them. this requires a fair bit of tools, a multimeter, and some troubleshooting skills.

Do you have anyone in Houston, Texas whom you recommend for repairs? The garage I used in the past is just too expensive. Also, I asked a friend about the terminology, and was using crank incorrectly. It does crank, but is either not getting spark or fuel which I suppose is the last thing to happen before you can drive. I don't have the spark plug wrench to check that aspect so I guess I'd have to rely on the shop to be honest. Whenever I've had repairs in the past, it quickly runs into the high hundreds, and that's just not possible now. Again, thank you for replying.
