Default Another FP relay bites the dust

1989 740 GL. Well this relay only lasted 6 months so it looks like I'll need to up my spend on a better brand. Also it seems that they all fail at the pin 30 where you can see the dark burn spot on the relay. Looking at the solder joints in the PCB doesn't show any cracks so I bet something opens as it heats up. Also pin 30 seems to be the frame ground of the relay coils so I assume the ECU is switching grounds. So I just plugged in another spare and off we go. Will order another part today .

What brand is that? I've never had big problems with the OEM ones... they seem to last 10+ yrs, seen 20+.

Its not the relay brand. Most likely its your fuel pump drawing too much current giving you an early warning that its ready to fail.

I was considering that too and have a new Bosch pump in my parts bin. The pump in the car now is the 2nd one and only has maybe 150K on it. Did the in tank and the main pump at the same time so maybe I'll put it up on the lift and change it along with a new filter.
As for the brand of the relay it doesn't have a name on it and I suspect it might be one of those $10 Chinese units.

Much better to get a good relay first than to change the fuel pump.

Already put in a new relay. I have 3 more left in my parts bin. Also I have a new pump and filter so being it only takes about an hour to do and it's going to rain again tomorrow it will give me something to do.

OK changed the main pump and filter today. Looked up my records and saw I replaced the pump at 200K miles and the filter at 300K miles. Now have 373K on the car. I must have been cheap because the FP I took out didn't have a brand or part number. Also it had a different wiring set up but I did it without screwing up the OEM connectors. The old pump was always a little loud and I could hear the initial 5 sec hum at start. The new Bosch pump is so quiet I had to get my stethoscope to listen if it was running. So big difference in quality I guess. OK now I'll track the FPR and see if it burns up.
