Default Correct fuel pump relay?

I've had a very occasional stalling-while-driving problem with my 96 850 automatic wagon. Having read through back posts, it sounded like it might be corrected with a new fuel pump relay, so I ordered one from FCP Groton. It's the pink KAE model stamped with their number 3.302.210 but identified as part number 9441029 by Groton. Unlike the old relay, which has four prongs, this one has five — an extra one in the middle. When I plug in the new relay the car starts and almost instantly dies. When I reinstall the old relay the car runs fine. The guy at Groton says this is the right relay for the 95-97 850 with auto transmission. I suppose it could just be a faulty relay. But does anyone have additional information? Thanks.

I think the new relay is not the correct one. I have only seen 1 pink relay before like the one you are talking about. I think the relay is a special one.

Default this might save someone some trouble

For what this is worth, I found that the fuel pump relay that FCP Groton sells for the 95-97 850 with automatic transmission (KAE #9441029) did not match the relay that was in my 96 850 with automatic trans. The relay I ordered had five prongs. My original had four. When I ordered the relay for the 95-97 850 with manual transmission — KAE #9434225 — that matched my original and actually worked in the car. Go figure. Plus one that works is $30 cheaper.

Do you have any codes? Has the mpg dropped like a stone?

Default Codes

Not really. I have what I believe is an unrelated P0410 code because the air pump seems to be dead. And the mileage seems unchanged.

I was having stalling issues, just like you, plus a few codes popped up. I checked the fuel pump and it was obliterated. Put another one and all problem fixed.

I was actually surprised how easy was to check the fuel pump -- through the access hole behind the rear seat. Unscrew the "bottle lid" (i.e. fuel pump plastic nut) about 2-3 inches in diameter and voila... I was actually surprised the car could still run like that.

I think that as long as the base and connectors are the same, and it fits in the slot it should be okay even if it's pink. I bough one at S&G auto parts and the cover was pink but the base and 4 connectors were the same as my original (I took it with me). It works fine and my stalling problem has vanished! By the way, the dealer quoted me a price of $55 dollars, said the price just dropped recently from $74 but didn't have one, needed to be ordred. S&G had one in stock and quoted me $74. I told him the dealer was only charging $55. He said, "Okay, I'll take $55." just like that. Shows you what fantastic mark-up these parts have! Hope this helps. Rickford.
