It wasn't a fire. Someone tried to steal the car... wife walked out the house... the lookout took off and then the bungling booster jumped out of the car and ran off.

Yes the doors were unlocked. I've had my cars rummaged through many times. Its kinda frustrating but I've learned not to leave anything of value in the car.

When they wanted to rummage through my 240 they broke out the rear passenger door window because the doors were locked. They proceeded to put a bow in the rear seat attempting to get it fold down to access the trunk. Too bad they didn't know the trunk won't lock.

Anyway... I'm thinking the 30 year old Volvo with historical plates that they tried to steal just needs a new ignition lock cylinder. But I don't know... just know I'm feeling pretty pissed off.

And I have zero experience replacing a ignition cylinder.

Looks like you need to remove the total ignition cylinder and interlock. There is the electrical part attached to the rear of the cylinder assemble which can be removed and using a screw driver you can start the car but until you remove the cylinder assembly the steering wheel will be locked. Look under this cylinder and start taking the bolts/screws out. You need the whole assembly.

If you can still turn it with a key or another tool and line it up it can be pulled out. If not, you have to drill it out and fit a new lock in its place. It's not that hard, I did it once...

I believe wityh registration or title, and your ID, you can order the lock with the original key so you don't need to use two different keys.

but they rather trashed your dashboard trying to get to it.

Yeah they trashed a couple pieces of trim. Worst part being the coin tray. The other pieces I can replace.

I've got it drilled to the point that I can start the car with a screwdriver.

Where exactly is the release pin for the cylinder?
