Default ASK : Engine Swap for 1993 940

Hi, Im a new member here and Im from Indonesia.

Im planning to do an engine swap, the original is a 2.3 non turbo with ZF transmission

What do you think I should do to improve the engine performance ?

My ZF transmission is already has many troubles and Im considering to swap it to AW71

Im seriously considering to swap my old engine to the s90 3.0 T
But might as well install a proper turbo on my current engine such as Garret etc

What do you guys think ?

Regards
IB

So you want to swap 3.0 from an S90 into a '93 940NA? Or turbo charge it to get better power? You have a ZF in the 940 now?

Well, it all depends on the availability, prices, etc in Indonesia...

Hard to turbo a NA car. Here, in the US, I'd just get a turbo car. The AW trans are better; here we don't even see much ZFs after 1990, I believe the AW are better, yes... The S90 motor has to use the S90 trans as well, and from my experience reliability and economy are not as good as the B230--I'd not do it, as it is pretty difficult swap to boot.

I like the B230F with AW as the best, most reliable, drivetrain you can have. To get better power you may try a hotter cam...

Hi, thanks for the reply

2nd hand turbo cars or racing cars r very very rare and expensive here. For the example a 91 BMW M3 would cost around $20k-30k and is considered a collector item. Japanese car isnt so much different.

My ZF transmission has already indcating many errors and theres limited supply for ZF parts here. Most 940 here is using AW transmision.
Buying either AW or ZF transmission online is much cheaper also. And if Im to swap the engine to S90 3.0 Im going to buy it online anyway.

But apart of those facts, I like my 940. I go anywhere everywhere with it
I feel comfortable and confident with it.
I even enjoyed it more than my other volvo, my 850.

So do you think its better to add a custom turbo into my current B230F ? do you think its cheaper? Is there going to be a lot of adaptation items for the engine?

All parts will have to be bought online.

PS : please pardon my imperfect english

Putting a turbo on a normally aspirated B230 requires a bit of work but it has been done. If you are looking to do such, I suggest going up on TurboBricks | High Performance Volvo Club . That site has lots of info about getting more horsepower out of these engines

What I meant is to buy another car, a 940 TURBO, NOT to make your car turbo... Turboing your car certainly could be done but I wouldn't do as I am afraid of too many problems in the conversion process, and the added problems afterwards. As far as reliability, you cannot beat what you have now, once you add an AW transmission.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Looking for a used 940 turbo would definitely cost a lot more than doing the modification custom by yourself as its also considered rare and a collector item. To be more exact, all 940s here are labelled 960, equiped with a 2.3 non turbo and a 3.0 non turbo (also considered rare, imported by the government for intl conference purpose)

However, the volvo community in Indonesia is considered large.

Unlike in the US or Europe, most cars in Indonesia is Japanese and on sale with basic specification.

the 960 actually has a lot of changes relative to a 940 other than just the engine. more sound proofing, completely different dashboard and electrics, and were usually maxed out with power options, while 940's tended to be somewhat more basic.
