I have a 1986 Volvo 240 wagon. It is a manual shift. It has developed a very bad vibration when you reach a speed of about 60 mph and by the time you reach 70 mph the vibration is unreal. The vibration is also present if you are doing about 55 mph and take your foot off the accelerator the car vibrates very badly for a few seconds. It feels like it might be coming from the rear, but I am not sure. If anyone might know what is going on that would be great. Check the drive or propeller shaft from the gearbox to the back axle. Pay particular attention to the support bearing which is about halfway along. If this is dry, worn or loose it will cause vibration.

 

I went out and looked at the shaft and the support bearing. The support bearing does look old and probably has never been replaced. should there be much play in the shaft where the support bearing is when I push on it.

 

There should be very little movement. The support bearing is a ball race inside a flexible rubber housing.

 

How hard would this be to replace for the novice repair person
