balance pulley

are there any special tools needed to pull the harmonic balance pulley from the shaft? i.e. compression fit.

No. Only tool you "need" is the crank holder for loosening and tightening.

Go to Sear's and pick up a Harmonic Balance puller. They are pretty universal and can be used for removing other pulley's.

You don't need a puller for Volvos. Just tap on it and pry it off.
