Balance Shaft drive Belt Broke on 740 glt

Balance Shaft drive Belt Broke on 740 glt
Hi all my first post and it not a good one for my faithful old Volvo
Basicly i was doing about 40 mph when the oil light come on
i hit the clutch engine died i pulled over could not restart the car
called AA he said timing belt broke and towed it home
so today i removed all the timing cases and discovered that one of the Balance Shaft drive Belt sprockets has sheared off
so my question is would the engine have survived this or is it scrap?
The engine is( now was ) a 16 valve dohc (think b234f)
