Default B234f, does it really need the balance shaft belt ?

I have a 91 940 gle with the b234f twin cam motor.
simple question.

Is the balance shaft belt needed ?
What will happen without it ?

I don't know but what I do know is that you shouldn't take any short cuts with that motor, especially the belts! I doubt Volvo put it there for looks.

isn't the oil pump run off the balance shaft?

This is just a "what if" deal.
I replaced all belts etc about 1,000klms ago.

I remember seeing posts about early mitsubishi motors where they take the balance belt off.
gives them a minuscule gain (2kw ?) and no one ever notices the slight vibration at around 4k rpm from memory.

Balance shaft drives the oil pump. Engine wouldn't last long without it.
