Default Cable-operated clutch and return spring.

The clutch cable on my 1975 245 snapped. I had to drive it home in first gear without stopping. Good times. When I got under there though, I noticed that the return spring that's supposed to go on the clutch fork was missing, and not only that but I couldn't even find where it was supposed to mount to. I figured if it'd snapped or come off I'd still see it or part of it hanging there, but there's no sign of it ever existing. Did some Volvos not have them? Are they necessary?
