you can do whatever you want with the CIS. Personally I use it on my 83 242TI. And it is alway reliable for me. Honestly if I was to swap in some EFI system. I would skip LH and go straight to MegaSquirt S&S. But you have to be really confident in your abilities first.

CIS does not require much maintenance. Once you understand how all of the parts work together, and you have the appropriate tools to diagnose, it's pretty good within it's designed parameters.

If it has sat for 5 yrs, you really need to remove the tank and clean it well and replace the fuel filter before starting it. Any crud will clog expensive parts. I would replace the rubber fuel hoses also.

I would agree that Megasquirt would be a better alternative, based on initial and ongoing cost. I'll add a stronger caution that you really should have it tuned on a dyno to get the air/fuel etc correct to avoid engine damage. The same goes with swapping out CIS parts from a different car. I cheaped out and just use my Innovative LM-1 wideband to adjust air/fuel ratio and the street for my loaded pulls, but I keep my cars pretty stock.
