I'm reposting this so hopefully someone will have an answer... thanks!

I have a 1991 740 Turbo. Got it back from the shop today, they replaced all the hoses. I drive off the lot and switched the climate control switch from A/C all the way to the defroster position. After a few minutes defrosting I tried to switch it to the facial air position and the switch is stuck! I pulled/pushed it pretty hard trying to get it out of the defroster mode and it wouldn't budge! Anyone ever have this problem? Solutions? I'm thinking I need to take it all apart to see why it's stuck.

Well, you can try that, taking it apart, may be something jammed, but it's a sealed unit as far as I remember, so you may well need a replacement after all. It comes out easy, just pry the trim around it, and then four screws hold it in, then unplug it, and get in it. My 1991 940SE was like that, I got another control after all.

 

it's the manual a/c unit with the sliders not the automatic unit with the dials.

is it possible to "update" my a/c control unit with the automatic unit?

 

OK, this one cannot be changed for thenewer one, BUT this one is much simpler and CHEAPER as it is all mechanical. I'd open it up, there are a couple of wires attached to the sliders, and see if it's jammed up. But it can also be some problem further down the line to the actual flaps which would be harder to fix. At any rate, get in it and explore-it's the way to learn...

 

Opened it up and there's a small metal spoke looking piece that's vertical with a small black circle piece in front of it... the switch is getting jammed due to this small black piece falling forward... i held the piece and was able to move the climate control through all the options but on every option the defroster stayed on. Anymore ideas? Thanks!

Go to a wrtecking yard and get the whole unit for $10.
