Default Cold Start issue: 1988 240

Hi All

I have an 88 240DL wagon with a 5 speed manual. Over the last few weeks, the car is hard to start in the morning. I sometimes have to hold the gas pedal halfway to the floor while cranking, and then it takes maybe 30 seconds before finally sputtering to life. The it idles ok, but stumbles/hesitates when I give it throttle off of idle(until it's completely warmed up). Once warm it runs fine.

I will note: If the car was driven late the night before(fewer hours between starts) it will usually start fine normally the following morning.

*Both pumps have been checked and work fine
*Cold temp sensor replaced
*Fuel filter replaced
*Fuel Pump Relay replaced
*Thottle Body, MAF Sensor, & Idle Solonoid all removed and cleaned.
*Fuses checked(under hood as well)

Would the MAF sensor cause this? I did unplug the MAF, and the car started and ran 'ok' without it. I didn't drive it that way, but it idled fine.

I appreciate any help or input on this issue. Thanks

I am no expert at this, however, since no one has posted anything, I will add my two cents: you already changed the temperature sensor so, check the plugs, cap, rotor and wires. I am thinking that it could be ignition. These are pretty straight forward checks.

If the ignition checks out OK, then next time you start it up on a cold morning, before starting it, squirt some staring fluid into the intake tract. I think there is a vacuum tube you could remove to squirt it in there. Then try starting. If it starts right up, it is a fuel problem.

See this thread:

Going off of what he says, I'd agree that the AMM isn't likely the issue.
Cold start injector functioning norally?

Thanks for the suggestions

When the issue first popped up, I changed the fuel filter. The car started fine for a couple of days, and then went back to the hard start(cold). I then cleaned the TB, Idle valve, and the MAF. It started fine for a coupel days again then went back to hard cold starts.

Anyhow, I had tuned the car up less than two years ago(plugs, cap, rotor, wires), so I kinda dismissed the ignition probability.. Until 240 Guy suggested the tune up possibility. Saturday I replaced the plugs and it seems to have cured the problem. The car has started fine for the last three mornings. The old plugs looked OK to me, but the gap had widened(over .035) on all. They were set at .028when I installed them.

240 Guy, thanks. I'll update this if I have anymore issues with cold starts.

I had the same symptoms and my mechanic was stumped for a week. It turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator.
