Color code

don't think that plate has the paint code. believe you need to look for another plate/sticker somewhere
on the car. this link below gives one possible translation of the plate codes. i'll take a stab at the last line
on your plate
245=model wagon 45= b21f engine 9= cat + o2 sensor 3= without sunroof 6= aw55 auto trans 1= left hand drive 31= California
is that close?

anyways, matching paint by color code isn't going to be that accurate, because the colors change with age, so unless you're doing a full repaint, thats less than desirable. a paint shop can mix a custom color that matches your CURRENT body color via a colorimeter.
now, Mercedes, a dealer can look the VIN up on their EPC (Electronics Parts Catalog), and give you every option, paint, interior, and trim colors, etc. I don't think Volvo kept records that closely, but then they were 1/3rd the cost of Mercedes.

The Volvo color codes are usually on the plate on the passenger side of the core support.
The Volvo dealer has the same info as the Mercedes at least as far back as mid eighties... and no, Volvos were not 1/3 of the cost of the Mercedes: 1993 MBZ 190e MSRP $33,930. Volvo 240 $22,215, 960 Volvo $36,070, MBZ 300e $50,300, i.e. more like Volvo was about 2/3 the cost of the Mercedes.... Simpler car, more utilitarian but infinitely easier to fix and more durable in that era; have had both marks since the 80's, and I still have 1999 E320, and it's a great car but certainly don't enjoy working on it the way I do my Volvos....

I rather enjoy working on my W124's, a 1993 300CE Cabriolet (my current daily driver), and a 1994 E320 wagon (wife's daily driver).
and they are way nice to drive, the ride and quiet and solidity of a W124 sedan is so far beyond even the S90 that its not funny. I think after the W124, mercedes quality started downhill.

I like the W124, had several, after the W123 which I brought over from Europe back when it was allowed (it is again as they are now "classics"). Biggest complain I have about the 124 is the atrocious climate control--last one I had never managed to clear the windshield unless it was blasting full on, much prefer the Euro version with the *****.
Agree with the quality, but after the W210 line, they went badly, badly, down... my '99 is great still. Somehow seems like the newer they are the worse they are, I don't get how the buyers put up with it, this applies especially to BMW and MBZ. Volvos after 1998 are dead to me too. Hate to say it but if I wasn't an ever tinkering "car guy" I would drive a Toyota, or a Lexus.
